It is true that we are what we eat. Recent diet trends have created a disease-ridden and obese population. The industrialization of agriculture has stripped nutritional value from most of our mainstream food supply. Grass Roots Farm is a return to local sustainable farming with a shift back to a food chain with green plants, nurtured by the sun, at its base.
The strength of Grass Roots Farm is in its proximity to a local, well-informed public, and the underlying emphasis on working with nature through low-input agriculture. The beef and poultry produced on the farm will carry a small carbon footprint, will be humanely raised, healthy, and totally pleasing to the palate. Grass Roots Farm offers a sane alternative to industrialized agriculture.
The property, owned by Tom Bohan and Kristin Bohan, is located at 860 West Brookfield Road in New Braintree, Massachusetts. Grass Roots Farm has been part of local agriculture since 1742. The Bohans are continuing this heritage. Their farm has over 200 acres of rolling pastures divided by a meadow creek and surrounded by a forest with tall white pines, ash, oak, and cherry trees. Their commercial greenhouse is a Solar Star II. They extend the growing season with hydroponic heat from an outside wood boiler. The farm produces a large assortment of flowers, and vegetables.
In addition the Bohans are raising Devon’s, Angus Beef, poultry and pork products.
For the past 7 years, Tom has been clearing the land and bringing the farm back to life. Currently, the 200-acre property has over 32 acres in open pasture.
Thomas Bohan and Kristin Bohan are the sole proprietors of Grass Roots Farm. Tom’s passion for farming has led him to working in agriculture. He is convinced that the future of farming lies in the principles of sustainability and ecofarming. Grass Roots Farm exemplifies a major shift in American farming. The farm works to improve the soil and the nutritional value of the pastures by using rotational grazing to maximize feed value while building soil fertility. The emphasis is on agricultural practices that respect and value the natural rhythms of livestock while sustaining and improving natural resources.
Today the pastures are coming back, fencing is up, and the farm is ready to become a viable and profitable business. Production of 100% grass-fed beef and pastured poultry will be very successful. The farm is poised to become self-sufficient with few additional resources. Funding is needed to expand the herd of Devon and Angus cattle, construct a green-house, and an on-site farm stand.
The growth potential for Grass Roots Farm in both product and services is exponential. In addition to the beef and pastured poultry, pastured pork may eventually be introduced on the farm. Plans to diversify into starter vegetables plants, hanging baskets, and select organic produce are a short term goal.
